Last Scout Camping Trip
Yesterday, (November 24, 2013) I was released as Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 98 in Mackay, Idaho. I have been the Scoutmaster for this Troop for the past 4 years (this time). This release got me to thinking about my time spent in Scouting. I have been a registered Scout or Scouter for at least 50 years. I earned my Eagle rank when I was 15, and became the Venture (now Varsity Team) leader shortly after Shirley and I were married. I have also served as Explorer (now Venture) Post adviser, Scoutmaster (several times), Cubmaster for 10 years, Charter Representative, District Camping Chairman, District Cub Scout Training Chairman, District Cub Scout Chairman, and District Boy Scout Chairman (but not in this order). I was awarded the Silver Beaver Award by Teton Peaks Council BSA (now Grand Teton Council) in the late 1980s.
For our family, Scouting has been a family experience. Shirley has also been involved as a Den Leader (10 years plus), District Cub Scout Training Chairman, and is currently the Cubmaster of Pack 98 (past 5 years).
For over 20 years, Shirley and I organized and presented a Mountain Man Rendezvous for the Cub and New Scouts of the Lost River District as a Day Camp. Each of our boys, Erik, Tracy, Travis and Dirk all earned their Arrow of Light and the rank of Eagle Scout.
It may have been just a coincidence that our last camping trip for this year was November 15, 16 (1 week before my release). We camped on Bear Creek in the Pass Creek drainage of the Lost River Range. This is the last camp out I will take with the boys as their Scoutmaster.
